Vinculum Numbers

Share:

Let's explore a foundational concept in Vedic Maths: Vinculum Numbers. This isn't a sutra, but a revolutionary way to write numbers using both positive and negative digits! It's especially useful for avoiding difficult subtraction.

The "Bar Number" Concept ―

A Vinculum number has a bar over a digit, which means that digit is negative. For example, in 21, '2' is +20 and '1' is -1, so the number is 19. We've simplified the large digit '9'!

The Goal: Convert large digits (6, 7, 8, 9) into smaller, negative digits (4, 3, 2, 1 with a bar).

How to Convert 29

  1. Start from the right. The last digit is 9.
  2. Apply "Last from 10": 10 - 9 = 1. This '1' is negative, written as 1.
  3. Apply "By One More": Since we subtracted, add 1 to the next digit (2). 2 + 1 = 3.
  4. The Result: 29 becomes 31. (30 - 1 = 29).

Usage: Simplifying Subtraction!

To calculate 524 - 198, we convert the second number.

  1. Convert 198 to Vinculum: It becomes 202 (200 - 2).
  2. Rewrite Problem: 524 - 202.
  3. Solve Digit by Digit: Subtracting a negative is adding!
    • Right digit: 4 - (-2) = 4 + 2 = 6.
    • Middle digit: 2 - 0 = 2.
    • Left digit: 5 - 2 = 3.
  4. The Result: The answer is 326. No borrowing!
