Ekanyunena Purvena Sutra

Share:

Prepare for another incredibly fast multiplication technique! The "Ekanyunena Purvena" Sutra, which means "By One Less Than the One Before," provides a beautiful method for multiplying numbers by a series of nines (e.g., 99, 999).

The "One Less" Rule 📉

When multiplying a number by a string of 9s (where both have the same number of digits), the answer comes in two simple parts:

Left Part: Is simply the original number minus 1.

Right Part: Is the complement of the original number (found using "All from 9, last from 10").

Let's Multiply 46 × 99

  1. Left Part of the Answer: Take 46 and subtract 1: 46 - 1 = 45.
  2. Right Part of the Answer: Find the complement of 46 from 100. Using "All from 9, last from 10": 9-4=5, 10-6=4. The complement is 54.
  3. Combine Them: Just put the two parts together. The answer is 4554.
